Suggested Itinerary
The Libyan Sea Escape:
Ierapetra & Chrissi Island
09:30 AM – Arrival in Ierapetra
Ierapetra is famous for being the sunniest spot in Greece. Head straight to the harbor area.
-
Parking: Use the large free municipal parking area at the Ierapetra Port or the lots near the Venetian Fortress (Kales).
-
Culture: If you have 20 minutes before your boat, walk past the "House of Napoleon" (where he allegedly stayed in 1798) and the old Ottoman Mosque.
10:30 AM – Boat to Chrissi Island
The boat journey across the Libyan Sea takes approximately 45–60 minutes.
-
Important (2026 Status): As of 2026, to protect the fragile cedar forest ecosystem, boats are generally not allowed to dock at the pier. Passengers are dropped off near the shore (you may have to wade through knee-deep water) or remain on the boat for swimming.
-
The Island: You will find "Golden Beach" (Belegrina) covered in millions of tiny shells and turquoise water that looks like the Caribbean.
-
Cost: Boat tickets range from €25 – €35. Book in advance online to secure your spot during the summer months.
3:30 PM – Return to Ierapetra & The Kales Fortress
Once back on the mainland, take a stroll along the seaside promenade.
-
The Fortress: Visit the Kales Fortress, built by the Venetians in the 13th century to protect the harbor from pirates. It offers great views of the city and the sea.
4:30 PM – Seaside Dining
Ierapetra has some of the best-value seafood on the island.
-
Dining Pick: Napoleon Taverna for fresh catch-of-the-day or Zorbas for traditional Cretan mezes.
-
The Vibe: The "Paralia" (waterfront) is lined with cafes; it’s the perfect place for a cold frappe before the drive back to Gournes.

Pro Tips for 2026 Travelers
-
Island Logistics: Since 2024/2025, there are no shops or sunbeds on Chrissi Island to protect the environment. You must bring your own shade (umbrella), water, and food. There is absolutely no shade on the beach.
-
Wind Check: The Libyan Sea can be choppy. If the "Meltemi" winds are strong, boat trips may be canceled. Check the forecast (or with boat operators) the evening before.
-
The Drive: The route from Gournes takes you through the Pachia Ammos pass, the narrowest part of Crete (only 12km from north to south). The views of the Gulf of Mirabello on the way down are spectacular.
-
Eco-Rules: It is strictly forbidden to take shells or sand from Chrissi Island. Fines are heavy and frequently enforced by rangers.
