Suggested Itinerary
Anogeia & Ida Cave
09:30 AM – Sfendoni Cave (Zoniana)
Before reaching Anogeia, stop at this spectacular cave in the neighboring village of Zoniana.
-
The Experience: One of the most important caves in Greece, filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Tours are guided and depart every 30–60 minutes.
-
Entry (2026): Approx. €5.
-
Tip: Bring a light jacket; the cave remains a constant 18°C (64°F) year-round.
11:30 AM – The Village of Anogeia
Drive 15 minutes to Anogeia. Park in the Agios Georgios Square (the lower square) or near the Perachori (the upper square).
-
Tradition: Visit the local workshops where women still use traditional looms to weave intricate rugs and textiles.
-
Music: Anogeia is the home of the famous Xylouris family. You will often hear the Cretan Lyra echoing from the cafes. Stop at Grillos Cafe in the upper square for a Greek coffee and to see the photos of local legends.
1:30 PM – The "Antikristo" Feast
Anogeia is the capital of Cretan lamb.
-
Dining Pick: Taverna Aetos or Delina Mountain Resort.
-
The Dish: You must try Antikristo—lamb cooked across from the fire for hours. It is seasoned only with salt and is arguably the most authentic culinary experience on the island.
3:30 PM – Nida Plateau & Ida Cave
Continue driving 20 minutes uphill to the Nida Plateau (1,400m altitude).
-
The Legend: Hike the short, rocky path to the Ideon Andron (Ida Cave), the mythological birthplace of Zeus.
-
Landscape: Look for Mitata—beehive-shaped stone huts used by shepherds for centuries to make cheese. The air here is thin, fresh, and much cooler than the coast.
Pro Tips for 2026 Travelers
-
The Drive: The road from Tylissos to Anogeia is winding and steep. Ensure your rental car has a decent engine (1.2L minimum) and check your brakes before the descent.
-
Local Etiquette: Anogeia has a fierce sense of pride. A polite "Kalimera" (Good morning) goes a long way. Do not be surprised to see men in traditional black shirts and boots—this is daily attire here, not a tourist show.
-
Weather: Even if it is 35°C in Gournes, it can be 20°C and windy in Anogeia. Always pack a sweater for this trip.
-
Fuel: Fill your tank before leaving the Heraklion area; gas stations are sparse once you begin the climb into the Psiloritis range.
